The House of the Rising Sun

Este post já foi publicado neste blog, mas perdeu-se em uma mudança de servidor. Na época escrevi que a música, cantada por muitos intérpretes, não tinha uma origem clara. Desta vez, tenho mais informações sobre ela, embora a origem continue obscura.

A gravação mais antiga que conheço é a de Eric Burdon and The Animals, feita em uma apresentação no Ed Sullivan Show em 1964. Minha curiosidade sobre a música resume-se ao mistério que ronda sua origem. Embora ela tenha sido interpretada por muitas pessoas, nunca ficou claro quem compôs nem quem interpretou pela primeira vez. Vai o que apurei.

A música faz parte do folclore americano e realmente não tem autoria definida. A versão mais aceita é a do folclorista Alan Lomax, que sugere que a música tenha sido inspirada em uma balada do folclore britânico. A gravação mais antiga conhecida é de 1934, interpretada por Clarence Ashley e Gwen Foster - infelizmente ainda não consegui encontrá-la.

No começo do século XX, a expressão “rising sun” começou a ser usada freqüentemente para designar prostíbulos, e não se sabe com segurança se o local descrito na música é real ou ficcional. Existem três hipóteses de locais reais. A primeira indica um hotel que existiu no French Quarter, em Nova Orleans, na década de 1820. A hipótese ganhou força depois que escavacões, realizadas em 2005, encontraram cartazes com o termo “rising sun”. A segunda é o “Rising Sun Hall”, também do Século XIX, e que ficou conhecido por “encontros sociais” variados do Social Aid & Pleasure Club. A terceira está presente no guia Offbeat New Orleans, que assegura que a casa do sol nascente teria existido na Rua St. Louis, entre 1862 e 1874, de propriedade de Marianne LeSoleil Levant (o sobrenome seria a origem do termo).

A letra mais antiga, registrada pelo folclorista Alan Lomax é a seguinte:

It’s been the ruin of many a poor girl,
And me, O God, for one.

If I had listened what Mamma said,
I’d ‘a’ been at home today.
Being so young and foolish, poor boy,
Let a rambler lead me astray.

They call the Rising Sun.
